O.S.A is a nonprofit italian association which recognize the human relevance and translational limitations of the current paradigm in biomedical research and drug discovery, and the need for change. O.S.A. brings together scientists, researchers, graduated in medicine, veterinary, biology, psychology, pharmacology, etc. and volunteers to promote human-based and human-relevant alternatives to animal use in research, testing, and education.

For centuries, animals have been used to do research, analyze the effects of potentially toxic substances for our health as well as to study human diseases. However what is now understood is that animal experimentation is inherently uncertain. This, according to the biologist Francesca Pistollato, requires courage in admitting that some theories based on previous models must be questioned, and determination to change biomedical research so that it is without suffering.
Francesca Pistollato is a biologist and researcher at the Joint Research Center of the European Commission (Ispra - Italy). She works on the development, implementation and promotion of alternative methods and approaches to animal testing.
